Angelene Humphrey was born in 1983 in downtown Toronto. She graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Painting from Ontario College of Art and Design University. Since graduation she has worked as an artist on film and television sets, and as a teacher and mentor, administering numerous arts and crafts programs for inner city youth. Humphrey moved to Sudbury, Ontario in 2015 with her growing family, and has found a true love for the north. Her paintings have been shown in solo and group shows across the country, east to west coasts and internationally in Naples, Florida and London, England.
Humphrey surrenders her canvases to daring palettes and eclectic artistic genres. Her abstracts are vibrant, colourful and heavy-textured with gilded fragments casting shifting surprises in varying light.
Humphrey’s portraits are intimate and sincere. With disarmingly direct strokes, her subjects come alive with frank gazes that challenge the observer. Her current body of work is monochromatic, an ultramarine blue series focusing on the fragility of human life and intense emotional states. Humphrey’s goal is to create true relatability by sharing vulnerabilities, fostering true human connection through personal experience.
Humphrey reflects the complexity of life, captured on canvas, suspended in time. Eschewing artistic trends and fads, she continues to surprise us with unique yet timeless approaches to painting.
